MIAMI COUNTY, KS (KCTV) -
A 6-year-old boy is dead. Family members are grieving. Authorities are looking for answers.
That's the situation in Miami County, KS tonight after an accident there claimed the life of 6-year-old Gage Kraft, while sending his 8-year-old brother and 45-year-old grandmother to the hospital.
The accident occurred at 335th Street and Rockville Road Wednesday afternoon.
Family members said that intersection is like dozens of others in the area, extremely dangerous.
They say the combination of no stop signs, a gravel road, and a speed limit of 55 miles an hour is a major problem.
Neighbors, like Linda Donegan, who live close to the intersection, agree.
"Sometimes people speed along here too fast. We're so rural, it would be hard to enforce stop signs or speed limits," Donegan said.
The family tells us 45-year-old Stacy Adams had just picked up her grandkids from school. Because another road was closed by a second fatal accident, she had to take a detour. That detour resulted in her car being T-boned by 19-year-old Paola resident Jacob Masterson.
For its part, the Miami County Sheriff's Department said speeding was not a factor in the crash, but said accidents like this one are becoming all too common.
And, with the lack of signage, drivers need to take extra care.
"Unless it's marked, it's 55 miles an hour. There's no indication that speed was a factor, and they were wearing their safety restraints. Everyone just needs to pay attention, anticipate that a car might be coming," said Miami County Undersheriff Wayne McKinley.
The Miami County prosecuting attorney was also at the scene Thursday, trying to determine if charges will be filed.
Adams remains in intensive care, though her condition is improving. Brendon Kraft, the 8-year-old, has been updated to "good" condition.
A memorial fund has been set up to help the family:
