KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Police are keeping a watchful eye on metro highways as they investigate more than a dozen shootings.

According to sources, authorities have connected six of the possible 18 shootings, but that number could rise.

It could have been a lot worse for the driver who was hit in the leg while driving at Interstate 435 and Interstate 470, according to gun expert Scott Hattrup with UT Arms.

"That could be a matter of just a fraction of an inch, as far as the aiming point. It sure looks like he was trying to hit the driver," he said.

Hattrup is a trained marksman and spent years judging shooting competitions.

"That vehicle was targeted. There is no way you can randomly hit a moving vehicle three times without specifically aiming at it," he said.

Hattrup examined some still photos of cars damaged from the recent shootings and believes a semiautomatic gun was used.

"The only reason I think it was semiautomatic is that you've got three hits on a vehicle that was moving, and there is no way to cycle a bullet quickly enough and move over the span that the car was moving along a highway," he said.

He said authorities would have to get the actual bullet or spent projectile, which would give them a clue as to the caliber of gun used.

Hattrup also said from the photos it looked like the shooter was aiming down, so they would have been at a higher level firing at the car.

"It sounds like someone is trying to terrorize this area," he said.

Kansas City police have called in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to help with the investigation.

All three victims who were shot are expected to make a full recovery.
