Local fighter takes center stage in April UFC competition

Posted: Updated:

UFC, or Ultimate Fighting Championship, is becoming one of the most popular sports anywhere.

Kansas City UFC fans will be glued to the TV coming up later this month as a local fighter takes center stage.

Tim Elliott is a very laid back, soft spoken Lee's Summit, MO, resident, but you wouldn't know it if you just saw him competing in UFC. He's making a name for himself as a UFC fighter, but maybe not always in a positive light.

"Joe Rogan (comedian and reality show host) calls me awkward," Elliott said.

He says the comment is actually a compliment.

Elliott says this is a career path he never imagined going down.

"I wanted to be a veterinarian when I was younger. I love animals," he said.

In college he thought about becoming a fireman.

"I shadowed firefighters and went through a little bit of their training course and I thought that's what I wanted to be," he said.

Then the extremely smart, mild-mannered future Occupational Safety and Health Administration worker discovered ultimate fighting.

"As soon as I started fighting I just fell in love with it," Elliott said.

Elliott already has two degrees in Environmental and Industrial Safety, meaning down the road he'll have a job protecting people at their work place. He admits it's somewhat ironic for the gig he has now.

"I just try to be myself and that usually is filled through in the cage," he said.

At age 26 Elliott wants to see how far he can go in this job before he falls back on his degree.

"I really think I could be a champion one day," he said.

This is Elliott's fifth UFC fight. A win on April 26 in UFC 172 and he could get a shot at a title fight.
