AMHERST, MA (WSHM) -

More than 1,200 runners and walkers hit the streets on Sunday for the sixth annual 5,000-meter benefiting Autism Speaks.

The event is organized by several UMass student groups, including four different fraternities and sororities on campus.

The 5K attracted a variety of people from families to the UMass football team.

The event was the biggest one yet, as the runners and walkers raised more than $50,000.

Not everyone on hand was celebrating Sunday's event.

Close to a dozen protestors were on hand, with the message that Autism Speaks does not speak for them.

Two Springfield sisters, one who has autism, told CBS 3 that there are better ways to support those with and affected by autism.

The protestors said they would like to see those taking part in Sunday's event to help other organizations that also work with autism.
