KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The outfit, the date, the hair and shoes - teens everywhere are thinking about these things as prom season approaches.

Some churches made it a little easier for some girls who might have otherwise not been able to afford the night.

Vanessa Toland is a teacher by weekday and a friend to her students by weekend.

"There's no way I can have a relationship by just meeting their educational needs. I need to meet their social needs as well," she said.

This weekend that means taking her students like Kenji Walker to a prom dress giveaway at Central United Methodist Church in the Brookside neighborhood.

"It's very expensive. We've had some fundraisers to help raise money for our prom and also money for dresses," Toland said.

For Toland's students, prom is a week away and the planning can overshadow the fun for low-income families.

"Dresses nowadays, it's like getting married. Dresses are very expensive and a lot of parents can't afford that, especially if you have two girls going to the prom at the same time," said Jan Jeffrey with Centennial United Methodist Church.

Central and Centennial United Methodist churches teamed up for the first time this year, taking in more than 1,500 dress donations.

"There's a lot of pressure. You don't know who you're going to go with, how you're going to look or what you're going to get. So it's a lot of pressure," said Zaneta More, a high school senior.

Wearing her newly found gown, More said this is one less thing she has to worry about before the big dance.

"If you can't afford it, it's for free. It's like ‘you go get it,'" she said.

The Central United Methodist Church at 5144 Oak St. will take dress donations year-round. They said they're in need of more plus-sized dresses.
