Little boy receives special gift at Make-A-Wish event

Posted: Updated:

Crown Center was bustling bright and early Saturday morning for the KC Walk for Wishes, one of the big events for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The chilly morning only served to put a little pep in the steps of hundreds of people who turned out for Saturday's event.

KCTV5's cameras captures several kids, signs in hand, who all wanted their wish to come true, but one special 10-year-old boy learned he was about to pack his bags for Europe.

Gavin Beaver was diagnosed with cancer near his spine.

"It was Ewing's sarcoma, an aggressive form of cancer, so he had chemo treatments and radiation almost every two weeks for all of 2013," said Gavin's dad.

You'd never know he'd been through so much to look at him now. The intensive treatments are working and the quiet kid with the sweet smile is in remission and about to be on his way to Scotland.

"He had no clue what was going on today. He knew that there was going to be Make-A-Wish kids getting honored, but he had no idea that he was going to get his wish today," said Gavin's mom.

The little boy, who quietly and graciously accepted his gift, said he's looking forward to walking the grounds and touring the castles of Scotland, a country that was always at the top of his list of places to visit.

"Because my friend had relatives in Scotland and he used to tell us about it when he came back from trips," Gavin said.

For his parents, it really doesn't matter where they go, just so long as they're together.

"It's just exciting that we can finally do something as a family and take all the worries of last year," said Gavin's mom.

KCTV5's Erika Tallan emceed the morning's event.
