FAIRWAY, KS (KCTV) -

For those who have ever felt uneasy about walking to their car alone or going for a run late at night, there is a website that offers a new form of security.

It is called Kitestring.

Users put in their phone number and a list of emergency numbers. They let it the application know when they intend to get back home. Then, the site sends a text asking if they made it safely.

If users don't check in, it sends out a message to emergency contacts.

Stephan Boyer, 22, designed the app for his girlfriend and to help others have a preventative peace of mind as they head out alone.

"Acts like an emergency broadcast system in case you get in trouble," he said.

Lisa Dunbar has her dog, Daisy, for protection for her walks, but likes the idea of the website designed to make lone walkers feel safer.

"I might consider it if I didn't have my dogs with me," she said. "I would definitely want my daughter who is in college to use it when she is home."

Runners, like Emily Miller, who sometimes walk alone say they would definitely try it out.

"I run every other day or every day when I can after work, so this is a great idea," she said. "I would do it just because alert people where I am and if I made it back or not. Walking alone isn't always the best idea."

Kitestring was developed as an online app two months ago, but it already has 1,500 users.

It is popular among hikers and joggers but also getting some attention from caregivers of older generations.

Right now, it is not an app people will find on their smartphone, it is only online but does send text messages to your phone.
