Bill Self weighs punishing Tharpe for lewd picture on Twitter

LAWRENCE, KS (KCTV) -

The University of Kansas is weighing what punishment point guard Naadir Tharpe should face after a lewd photo of him and a married woman surfaced on social media.

The photo surfaced after KU was bounced from the NCAA Tournament with a disappointing second-round loss. The picture, which was shared on Twitter, has since been deleted. Tharpe   hasn't commented publicly, and his last tweet was on March 29.

Warning: Adult content.

The photo is apparently of the 22-year-old Tharpe and a 38-year-old married woman inside a KU dorm for basketball players. Tharpe, who apparently took the picture, is not wearing a shirt or pants. The woman appears to be licking his face while wearing a form-fitting white shirt that is pulled down low enough to expose part of her breast.

The woman joined the Gardner-Edgerton School District in August 2010. She resigned her position with the district on Monday after the picture surfaced.

Gardner-Edgerton High School students were buzzing about the graphic photo this week after it filled their Twitter timelines. Discussions about Tharpe and the woman's judgement have filled KU basketball-related forums.

Basketball coach Bill Self acknowledged on Monday that Tharpe's poor judgement will be addressed by the athletic department.

"Obviously, we are aware and had it brought to our attention this weekend. Certainly extremely disappointed with what transpired and the judgment that went along with it," he said. "To say anything else publicly would be something that would be inappropriate at this time. It will be handled internally. It will be addressed, and it will be handled internally."

KCTV5 went to the woman's home on Wednesday, but could not reach her. A man at the residence waved KCTV5 off, indicating he didn't want to comment.

Neighbor Eric Ohman said he's minding his own business and others should do the same about a family he had only positive things to say about.

"They've been good neighbors. Been great neighbors," Ohman said.
