PR woman's job takes her to celebrity heights

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

There is little that goes on in Kansas City that this local public relations agent doesn't know about.

Kathy Hanis has had her hand in many of the major events over the years and has just been appointed to the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame Board of Trustees, an appointment by the governor.

Hanis loves the sports and entertainment industry. She's been in the business for 30 years, representing and working with some very famous faces.

"Some of the biggest are Garth Brooks, Michael Jackson, Tupac," she said. "…George Brett, Huey Lewis…Mickey Mouse. I tell everyone, ‘from Mickey Mouse to Michael Jackson.'"

It's quite a resume and one that has earned her a reputation for getting things done. Her early career took off when she joined her Hollywood publicist uncle in Los Angeles. He counted Michael Jackson's manager among his friends.

Hanis represented the Guinness World Record Museum.

"We had a big event at the Guinness Museum and presented Michael with his title, ‘King of Pop,'" she said. "It was an honor. I wrote the proclamation, whereas, therefore, so be it, and Casey Kasem said the words, he was the emcee for the day, so that was a lot of fun, and a great moment."

While in California, Hanis also worked for Disney. There she learned a lesson that stuck.

"One thing I learned at Disney was that you always did the best that you can, and you always try to outdo what you last did so you become better and better every time you do something," she said.

Also in California came one of her fondest memories of her favorite Kansas City Royal.

"I happened to be at the right place at the right time when I was able to be in Anaheim when George (Brett) hit his 3,000th hit and I'll never forget that moment. That was one of my favorite sports moments of all time," Hanis said. "He was always a very nice guy, gracious, and I was thrilled and honored to meet and work with the legend several times."

She has served Kansas City with her passion for people ever since, handling events, talent and projects.

"It's building relationships with producers, editors, reporters, and pitching a client so that they can generate as much publicity as they can about their businesses," Hanis said of her job.

About the only star left that can impress this professional is one who can carry a tune.

"Oh my goodness, it was really thrilling to meet Michael Buble," she said.

Hanis also likes to paint, but rarely has the time. She said someday she might like to take up painting again on a beach somewhere.
