Police are investigating after a man was struck by a train and killed Tuesday evening.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says 52-year-old William E. Gainey, of Yanktown, SD, was killed when he tried to beat the train on foot.
The incident happened about 6 p.m. near the railroad crossing at North Moonlight Road and East Main Street.
"We have a couple witnesses we are talking to at this time. It appears the gates came down, and he was trying to cross before the train came and was struck," Lt. K.L. Woods said.
Authorities are investigating just how fast the train was moving but Woods says this is a sad reminder to people to never try to beat a moving train, and it is too easy to misjudge how fast they are coming down the tracks.
