Wildfire awareness week - are you prepared?

Posted: Updated:
TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

This week is SouthwestWildfire Awareness week, and officials want to remind the public to take theproper precautions to ensure they stay safe.

A very dry winter andwinds picking up make for prime fire conditions.   Fire officials say that now, in these drymonths, is the time to remove dry, dead brush from around homes before it getstoo hot to do so.

Doing this creates adefensible space, so if a wildfire is close to a home, removing the fuel meansthe home has a better chance of not being destroyed.  Cleaning up the dead vegetation around thehome applies not only to those in the city, but especially to those who live inrural communities.

A good reminder of howwildfires can affect the southwest, is the Monument Fire in nearby CochiseCounty, it sparked just outside Sierra Vista and destroyed or damaged dozens ofhomes and burned more than 30,000 acres.

Wildfire Awareness Week issponsored by the National Weather Service, as well as local, county and stateofficials.
