SHAWNEE, KS (KCTV) -

A shopping trip took a scary turn for a Johnson County woman when a man exposed himself in the middle of the afternoon.

It happened outside the Shawnee Station shopping center at Shawnee Mission Parkway and Lackman Road.

As the woman was walking back to her car, a man pulled up in a silver Mercury Mountaineer.

Police say he asked the woman for directions, but while she was answering, he pulled down his shorts and touched himself.

The woman jumped in her car, took off and called police.

"It's sick, it is really sick, people want to come out in public and do that," shopper Robert Valenzuela said.

Shoppers in the busy shopping center parking lot say hearing about the incident is putting them on alert.

"There's kind of a lasting trauma that makes you feel very victimized. "So yeah, that would be awful," shopper Pam Brill said. "Unfortunately when it gets warmer, I think more of that kind of stuff happens."

Neubauer knows first-hand how it can feel. She had a similar incident happen to her in a park.

"My concern is, with sexual perpetrators, they start out small and they get bigger, so if somebody is exposing themselves, does that mean they might do something more?" she said. "I think it's something to be taken seriously."

It is also something to keep in mind whether someone is in a parking lot or anywhere else on their own.

"Just everybody, be aware of your surroundings," said Brill.

The flasher was gone by the time Shawnee police arrived, but they do have a description they want people to watch out for.

Authorities are looking for a white man, 25 -30 years old, with stubbly facial hair. He was wearing a dark-colored shirt, shorts, a blue baseball cap and aviator-style sunglasses.

Anyone with information should call Shawnee police or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
