TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The HumaneSociety of Southern Arizona seeks foster volunteers as the shelter sees aninflux of pets, the most recent including an orange tabby cat and its four baby kittens that were left in a pillow casein the shelter's donation bin.

A  worker found the cat family while unloadingthe bin and saw one of the donations was wiggling.

"When Ilooked down and opened the pillowcase I saw four beautiful kittens and theirmom just sitting patiently," said Christine, a shelter tech.

The cat andkittens will be taken into foster care until they are old enough to be adopted. The shelter estimates the kittens to be about 7 weeks old.

"Animaldumping occurs sporadically at the HSSA. As a shelter, we can't be quick tojudge the folks who dumped the cats here.  Rather, [we] use this as fuel to educate thecommunity on what responsible pet ownership means," said Samantha Esquivel, publicrelations lead for the HSSA.

Esquivelsaid 149 pets are currently in foster care. Last year, HSSA foster volunteersclocked about 22,806 total hours. To find out how to get involved, call (520) 321-3704,ext. 126, or visit http://hssaz.org.
