FAIRWAY, KS (KCTV) -

The man whose confession landed Ryan Ferguson behind bars now wants out of prison himself.

Ferguson spent 10 years of a 40-year sentence in prison for the murder of Ken Heitholt, a Columbia Daily Tribune sports editor who was killed in 2001, because Charles Erickson said he did it.

Authorities finally determined Erickson was not telling the truth. Ferguson was released this past November.

Now Erickson plans to appeal in an attempt to be freed.

This weekend Erickson talks to 48 Hours on CBS News to tell his side of the story about how it all happened.

"He explains in a way we've never heard before why he did confess to this case and why he says he is innocent. The take away is, when you hear his story, it's quite believable and quite understandable and kind of explains how the whole case occurred," said Erin Moriarty with 48 Hours.

Experts predict Erickson's attempt to get out of prison will be much more difficult than it was for Ferguson since he is the one who actually confessed.

You can watch 48 Hours' in-depth investigation on this case on KCTV5. It starts at 8 p.m. on Saturday.
