KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
A local woman is alive thanks to a neighbor who saw her house on fire and ran to help.
By Thursday evening the scene was quiet on West 90th Street just west of Washington Street. Firefighters had put out a house fire that's believed to be electrical.
But when it broke out shortly before 4 p.m. Pat Williams was home asleep, not knowing that flames were growing closer.
"The fire was shooting out the basement windows. The man saw it, ran in and got me. I was sound asleep," she said.
Williams is talking about her neighbor, Giordano, the man who risked his own life to save hers.
"It was pretty smoky. You couldn't see really. But she was there, right by the front door," he said.
"He scooped me up and carried me out. The smoke would have got me, it would have got me," Williams said.
Williams' son quickly arrived as firefighters put out the blaze. They were all extremely thankful because, not only did Giordano rescue the elderly woman, her son said he even rushed back inside for her pet dog.
"I think that's really cool. That's a guy with his eyes on, he saw the smoke and ran in the door, scooped her up, brought her outside and made sure the little dog came along too. That's real cool, man, that's the good deed of the day," Bob Ellis, Williams' son, said.
It's a good deed that Giordano said is nothing more than looking out for one another.
"Just being a good neighbor," he said.
Investigators think the fire started in the basement. There's no word yet on how much damage it caused.
