School needs help to build playground

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Kids and playgrounds go hand in hand, but there are some neighborhoods that don't have playgrounds - even some elementary schools.

Genesis Promise Academy, located at East 44th Street and Cleveland Avenue, is one of them. When the charter school went from a middle to an elementary school four years ago they were never able to build a playground. The children have been utilizing a gym at the Boys and Girls Club of America next door, but they don't get to play outside.

The charter school was able to purchase a small lot across the street at 44th Street and Cleveland Avenue and an organization known as Kaboom has agreed to build it. The only problem is that the school doesn't have the funding to pay for the equipment.

One 8-year-old knows why she'd like to have a playground.

"A lot of people come there to play, so you can meet new friends," said Anjaliah Herring.

"For me, it was the swings. Many people talk about the swings, the monkey bars, climbing the walls. So our children, many of them don't have that opportunity. Many, when they go home, they have to stay inside because it's not safe to play outside," said executive director Pamela Pearson.

If you'd like to help, go to promiseacademykc.org. Or you can drop off a donation for the playground at the school at 3800 East 44th in Kansas City, MO.
