Man under investigation for child pornography drives into lake

JACKSON COUNTY, MO (KCTV) -

One person found dead in a car has been pulled out of Lake Jacomo, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office said.

Witnesses reported seeing the driver accelerate and drive into the lake Tuesday morning.

The incident happened about 11:40 a.m. near the north dock of the lake at shelters No. 6 and 7. No one saw anyone come out of the water.

The Jackson County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed the victim's identity as 40-year-old Jeffrey D. Welch of Lee's Summit, MO, and also said he had what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head.

The sheriff's office said investigators have since learned the Western Missouri Cyber Crimes Task Force (WMCCTF) was investigating Welch for crimes relating to child pornography. Because he is now dead, the WMCCTF investigation has been closed.

The Lee's Summit Underwater Rescue and Recovery was also on scene.
