OKEECHOBEE COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - It was the middle of the night Sunday when Okeechobee County investigators say Jose Fonseca broke into his estranged wife's home for a second time that day.
Earlier, investigators say, he had seen his wife with a new boyfriend at a store
There had been a confrontation and, detectives say, Fonseca stole his wife's clothing and jewelry, which he later returned.
The arrest affidavit shows the second break-in led to a brutal attack.
One child in the home said he awoke to the sounds of his mother screaming in the master bedroom.
The door was locked, so he had to break it down with his shoulder. Once inside, according to the affidavit, he saw his dad using a machete on his mother.
The son jumped on his father and got him in a choke hold, dragging him out of the room.
The dad, Jose Fonseca, then got into his car and drove off.
A short time after the attack, deputies pulled over the vehicle, they believed, Fonseca was driving. The report says Fonseca abruptly got out of his vehicle and began waving his right arm, clinching it as if he had a weapon.
Eventually, Fonseca was subdued and taken into custody where he faces several charges including first degree attempted murder.
He was denied bond during his first court appearance Monday.
The arrest affidavit says his estranged wife had initially filed a restraining order against her husband but it was later dropped.
She is recovering in a Tampa hospital. Her right wrist was nearly cut off and at least one finger on her left hand was severed.
