KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Expect a little more congestion downtown this weekend, as the city re-stripes the road to make space for more cars.

Crews will change the current configuration of Broadway Boulevard between Sixth and Ninth streets to improve traffic flow.

They are changing the current roadway configuration to have one full-time through lane and one center turn lane.

The eastern and westernmost lanes will become part-time through lanes, which will be open to traffic during rush hour and open to parking between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and after 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Kansas City's downtown population has increased in recent years, and residents and visitors have experienced intersection delays and parking challenges, city officials say.

Traffic engineers have identified the planned improvements as a way to improve traffic flow and increase the number of available parking spaces during off-peak hours.

Saturday's restriping will cause lane restrictions, but streets will remain open during the process.
