Police comparing bullets in I-70, I-470 shootings

LEE'S SUMMIT, MO (KCTV) -

Authorities are comparing the bullets fired in two highway shootings to see if they were fired from the same weapon.

The shootings Tuesday night occurred about 15 minutes apart, which is about the time it would take to drive from one location to another.

Sgt. Christopher Depue of the Lee's Summit Police Department said Friday that detectives in Blue Springs and Lee's Summit are working to get all the bullets removed from the two vehicles involved in the shootings. He said once that's done then they will be compared.

"That could take a while," he said.

Authorities in Lee's Summit shut off a lane on I-470 during rush-hour traffic Thursday as they worked to gather evidence. A police dog was used in the search for clues.

Depue didn't explain why authorities made the decision to snarl traffic during rush-hour rather than doing so earlier in the day when traffic would be lighter.

Blue Springs officials have released few details about the shooting in their city.

A Blue Springs man was shot in the leg and recovering after a bullet penetrated his vehicle about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. He was traveling on I-70 near Wood's Chapel Road.

His vehicle appeared to have been struck by two gunshots.

A man called Lee's Summit authorities after his vehicle was punctured by gunfire about 8:40 p.m. Tuesday. The man's white 2012 Ford Fusion was hit in the rear passenger side door, according to a Lee's Summit Police Department report obtained by KCTV5 on Thursday.

The man said he was traveling home from his son's basketball game when he approached the split of Missouri 291 and I-470. When he heard the gunfire and heard something strike the vehicle, he pulled off Missouri 291 and called police.

He said he was not involved in a road-rage incident and didn't know anyone who would be angry with him, according to a police report. He did describe a vehicle that could have been involved in a shooting.

Police have not released any details on a possible vehicle description.
