Police closed off lanes on Interstate 470 near Colbern Road as authorities searched for clues in a highway shooting in Lee's Summit.
Chopper5 saw a canine unit searching a grassy area on the side of the southbound lanes. The closure lasted less than an hour.
In a news release, Lee's Summit police said they are searching for clues in connection with Tuesday night's shooting. Police did not say why they didn't do the search earlier in the day rather than impede rush-hour traffic.
Authorities are working to determine whether the Lee's Summit highway shoot is connected to a man being shot on Interstate 70 Tuesday night. The shootings occurred about 10-15 minutes apart, which is about the time it would take to drive from one location to another.
A man called Lee's Summit authorities after his vehicle was punctured by gunfire about 8:40 p.m. Tuesday. The man's white 2012 Ford Fusion was hit in the rear passenger side door, according to a Lee's Summit Police Department report obtained by KCTV5 on Thursday.
The man said he was traveling home from his son's basketball game when he approached the split of Missouri 291 and I-470. When he heard the gunfire and heard something strike the vehicle, he pulled off Missouri 291 and called police.
He said he was not involved in a road-rage incident and didn't know anyone who would be angry with him, according to a police report. He did describe a vehicle that could have been involved in a shooting.
A Blue Springs man was shot in the leg and recovering after a bullet penetrated his vehicle about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. He was traveling on I-70 near Wood's Chapel Road.
His vehicle appeared to have been struck by two gunshots.
