Babies in stolen vehicle found safe

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Authorities say two infants who were in a stolen vehicle were found safe and sound Thursday afternoon.

The vehicle was in a north St. Louis neighborhood in the 4300 block of Lee St. This occurred about 3 p.m., according to KMOV-TV, KCTV5's sister station in St. Louis.

The Missouri Highway Patrol did not issue an Amber Alert yet. The system has come under criticism for how long it takes to have Amber Alerts issued. The criticism erupted after a stranger allegedly abducted Hailey Owens, 10, from her neighborhood. Authorities arrived within 10 minutes and had several credible witnesses describing the abduction, but it took two hours for troopers to issue the Amber Alert.

Currently now the paperwork has to be filled out by hand. The Missouri General Assembly is considering making it easier to get an Amber Alert issued.

St. Louis authorities say that they believe a 9-month-old baby and a 7-month-old baby were inside the vehicle that was stolen Thursday afternoon, KMOV reported. A man was believed to have taken the vehicle.

The 9-month-old baby was the man's child. The 7-month-old baby allegedly was taken from his mother earlier in the day by a woman and that child wound up in the vehicle that was later stolen. The man is now in custody.

The vehicle has been described as a newer model Pontiac Grand Am with Illinois temporary tags. It was last seen in the area of Newstead Avenue.
