INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

Nearly a dozen people were injured after a fire broke out at an Independence apartment complex.

The fire broke out shortly after 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the 9500 block of East Winner Road.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy fire showing from one unit of the apartment complex.

The fire was reported to be under control about 10:50 a.m.

Firefighters rescued multiple individuals from the building. Ten people were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, and five of those patients were transported to area hospitals.

Authorities estimate about a dozen people were displaced by the fire.
