KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
Say goodbye to grapes and hello to hops.
More people are choosing beer over wine, but not just any beer.
Recent numbers show the craft beer industry was worth a whopping $12 billion in 2012, and one Kansas City craft beer tasting bar and bottle shop is just one of the businesses in the area capitalizing on that trend.
It is hard to believe a beverage that dates back to the first century could find new life in this one.
"We basically opened to huge crowds. It has been consistent and solid and enthusiastic ever since," said John Couture, owner of Bier Station.
For Couture, this was more than just a hops hunch. He tapped into the craft beer market after seeing sales spike consistently year after year.
He opened Bier Station, 120 E Gregory Blvd., in December 2012, and it didn't take long for seasoned suds drinkers to jump on the craft beer bandwagon.
"I come up to this bar, and the place is packed full of families and kids. I started drinking other beers. Now a year later, I can't stand Bud Light any more, and I love craft beers," Mark Flavin said.
The Brewers Association reports American craft brewers sold 13.2 million barrels of beer in 2012, up from 11.4 million the previous year.
As for Bier Station, it has already grabbed the attention of DRAFT Magazine, which named it one of the top 100 beers bars in the country.
Tom Booker has been raising his glass at Bier Station since day one.
"This is truly an outstanding experience for people that want to diversify and try a different beer outside of Bud Light and Coors," he said.
And with more than 200 domestic and international brands to chose from, Bier Station is a business that will continue to brew overtime.
