KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
A 14-year-old boy was rushed to Children's Mercy Hospital on Saturday evening after shots rang out.
Kansas City police say his injuries were life-threatening, but his shooting may have been an accident.
The shooting happened about 5 p.m. at 4215 Virginia Ave. It was the shot heard round the neighborhood, and nearby residents, like Andrew Forde, came to investigate.
"We were sitting back up there at 42nd and Tracy on the patio, when we heard one gunshot. So my friend said, 'let's walk around here,'" Forde said.
The woman who called the police says she saw a group of high school age kids playing in the street. She says the boy who was shot cried out.
Forde says he didn't know anyone involved.
"They ain't got no business there, whatever they are doing," he said.
Police held another teenaged boy for nearly two hours before releasing him to his family. An officer on scene told KCTV5 News that the shooting was possibly an accident. Even so, neighbors, like Forde, are feeling a little shaken up.
However, police say there is no danger to the public, and that if investigators determine that the shooing was an accident, it is unlikely there will be criminal charges.
