OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

A man sexually assaulted an 11-year-old girl as she was walking to her bus stop Friday morning, Overland Park police said Friday afternoon.

The attack occurred about 7 a.m. at the Regents Center apartments in the 12400 block of Quivira Road. The girl was walking from an apartment complex to a bus stop when the attack occurred, police said.

The attacker is described as a white man in his 20s. He was wearing all black clothing, including a hooded sweartshirt.

"His face was covered by a surgical mask and he also had on a thick pair of camouflaged gardening gloves," according to the release from the Overland Park Police Department.

He forced the girl into a wooded area near the apartment complex and threatened her with a knife.

After she got free, she sought help. She was taken to an area hospital to be checked out.

The girl doesn't believe she knew her attacker, but told police she did not get a good look at him.

The department is conducting extra patrols. Anyone with information is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS or the Overland Park Police Department at 913-344-8750.

Parents say they are nervous and keeping a closer eye on their children.

"My heart's breaking, it's unfortunate and this is going to be something that she's going to have to remember for the rest of her life and impact her, and it just my heart breaks," Star Tebyanian, who lives in the area, said Friday night.
