Storms leave thousands without power in KCK area

KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

Thousands of people are waking up without power and one of the hardest hit areas is Kansas City, KS.

A utility pole caught fire about midnight Wednesday near South Boeke Street and Stinson Avenue. It is possible lightening caused the pole to catch fire.

KCTV5 News is waiting for more information from the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities.

At one point Wednesday morning, BPU crews were dealing with nine outages impacting about 5,941 customers near mostly South 14th Street to South 47th Street.

They also have outages from Steele Road to Merriam Lane. The totals kept changing throughout the morning.

If you are experiencing an outage, you are encouraged to report the outage to BPU or KCP&L.

KCP&L crews also worked through the night to restore power.

As of 6 a.m., they only a handful of customers are without power. But at one point, more than 2,900 customers were without power.
