MARANA, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The Town of Marana hasadded six new officers to its police department, all in an increased effort tohelp keep the residents safe.

The officers were sworn inlast week, with two officers already patrolling and the remainder in fieldtraining. This new crew of six is certainly an experienced group, with four ofthe officers coming to Marana from the Tucson Police Department, one from theCity of Eloy and another from the Tohono O'odham.

Each officer receivedtheir badge last week in a pinning ceremony. With this hiring the Marana Police Department is at 80 officers, whichthey consider to be fully staffed.   Thisis in contrast to the situation six years ago in Marana when, according to aMPD spokesperson, the department had to cut seven officers from the force dueto a turn in the economy.

According to the MaranaPolice Department the plan is to hire seven more officers in the next fiscalyear, but that will not be finalized until this summer when the town's budgetis released.
