Kansas Citians celebrate National Unplugged Day

Posted: Updated:
JOHNSON COUNTY, KS (KCTV) -

Friday was National Unplugged Day. Have you put your cell phone down or shut off your tablet or laptop? That's the goal. Stop the constant emailing, texting, Tweeting, and Facebooking, and take time to notice the world around you.

For many adults, including the ones KCTV5 News talked to, that's not an easy request.

"I don't know. I've never tried. I could try it, then I could tell you," said Shawnee resident Janet Cawley.

"I'm pretty addicted to my phone. It's got my schedule, and my notes. It's hard," was the reaction of Lenexa resident Joe Quinn.

Quinn's a very busy man, but he said he makes unplugged a priority.

National Unplugged Day goes until sundown Saturday.

Quinn said he comes to Pump It Up in Shawnee to play on the giant inflatables with his kids.

Pump It Up's owner Stacy Wright said his is the perfect place for parents to shut it all off and have some fun!

"We don't have any coffee bar, Internet areas of the parents because we want them to play with their kids. When we do open play, we charge for the kids, but not for the adults. They play for free. Same thing with our birthday parties. We don't count adults toward the total. We want them in there playing with their kids," Wright said.

Parents efforts to get away can pay real dividends. So says Quinn's son.

"Sometimes when we're really bored, I ask him to play with us. When he plays with us, it makes it a lot more fun," Aaron Quinn of Lenexa said.

Experts say there are any number of things you can do when you unplug: spend time with your family, read a book, connect with nature, whatever you want.

We'd like to unplug right now, but we have to finish this story. Let us know if you read this on Friday or on Saturday after you plugged back in.
