Child rescued from Independence home during standoff

INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

A man committed suicide and Independence police had to rescue his 15-year-old disabled daughter from inside the residence.

About 3:30 a.m., police were called to 40th Street and River Boulevard in Independence. The couple living there were arguing, and the man threatened suicide.

The woman fled the house with two kids and their grandmother. She left asleep in the house her 15-year-old daughter who has Down syndrome.

Officers unsuccessfully tried to reach the man. About 7:30 a.m., SWAT team members went inside to rescue the girl and found the man dead.
