Police in Franklin now say the man who allegedly approached two young girls in the Fieldstone Farms subdivision Wednesday morning and offered them a ride was just a neighborhood dad who was checking on them.
The 9-year-olds told their parents they were riding their bicycles when a man drove by, lowered his car window and asked them if they were going to school and then asked if they knew their way and offered them a ride. The children rode away in the opposite direction and reported the incident to their parents.
Officers spotted the vehicle from the incident near Hunters Bend Elementary on Friday morning. They say the driver flagged them down and told them he thought he might be the person they were looking for.
The man volunteered to talk with detectives and told them he was on his way to his home in Fieldstone Farms after dropping off his child at school when he saw two girls on bicycles who he thought were lost and stopped to check on them.
"After looking at this closely, we're certain that nothing was afoot here," said Sgt. Charles Warner in a news release. "When it comes to kids, however, we have a huge responsibility to get it right. That's why we sent the alert, and flooded area schools with extra officers this morning. Today's resolution is a best-case scenario, and a relief."
