It was a terrifying night for two men remodeling a Kansas City home. What started as a normal day on the job ended in fist fights and gunfire.
The signs of Jose Prieto's beating are all over his face and his eyes when he flinches at each passing car.
"I'm not feeling safe in this house after yesterday. Scary, but I have to work today to get things done in this house," the robbery victim said.
It was 11:50 p.m. Wednesday. He was rushing to finish the house at 20th Street and Elmwood Avenue for a tenant scheduled to move in Thursday.
Prieto walked to his truck to get a bulb for the porch light when he sensed someone behind him. He ran inside, but the man caught the door before he could close it.
"He tell me something about money. I don't remember," Prieto said.
Prieto doesn't remember much. His focus was on the man's fist swinging away at him and soon he began to pass out. But his co-worker came around the corner from the kitchen and saw the man pull a wad of cash from Prieto's front pocket and when the robber saw the co-worker, he fired three rounds.
The bullets hit the home's wall and floor. The holes they caused were already patched Thursday afternoon.
Prieto was back Thursday to finish the job despite his fear.
"I been thinking all day how I - if something else happens to me, I'm looking, how do you say, ‘Bon suerte?'" he said.
Good luck. Lucky. That's what he's been thinking about, about what could have happened.
"I got luck that I'm still alive," he said.
The robber made away with $200.
