Royals Hall of Famer Frank White running for Jackson County Legislature

Posted: Updated:

Former Kansas City Royal Frank White announced Thursday that he is running for the Jackson County Legislature.

The Hall of Fame second baseman and eight-time Gold Glove winner made it official that he will be running for the 1st District at-large seat being vacated by Theresa Garza.

"I just wanted to make it official today that I'm going to be running for the open first district at large seat," he said.

White, a Kansas City native, will be running as a Democrat. His opponent is Sherwood Smith, a fire union leader.

"This is my home. It is where I grew up. It is where my heart is," White said.

The 63-year-old has done just about everything since retiring from the Royals including radio play-by-play, managing a minor league affiliate and most recently being a coach on the Kansas City T-Bones staff. He has even written a book.

White said it is time to start giving back to the community that has given him so much. His platform will be rebuilding area parks and stopping violence among young people.

"I've lent my name in so many different areas of the city over the years, with the different charities and so forth. I just really feel like as a county legislator it gives me a bigger platform to help," he said.

He says he has been thinking about this run for two years.

The primary election is Aug. 5.

In a statement, Smith said he has been fighting for Jackson County for the past 25 years.

"I know things in Jackson County can get better," he said. "I've never swung a bat or played pro baseball, but I know I can help the county."

Some political leaders say Smith ultimately may reconsider his bid in light of White's announcement.

Garza is expected to run for a vacant City Council seat next year.

The winner of the Democratic primary will face a Republican in the November election, but the seat traditionally goes to the winner of the Democratic primary.
