Police seek clues after man found shot to death in KCK

Authorities are investigating after a woman made a startling discovery outside her KCK home – she found a man shot to death in her yard.

Kansas City, KS, police were called about 9:40 a.m. Tuesday to South 14th Street and Metropolitan Avenue on reports of shots fired in the neighborhood.

Detectives were going in and out of the left side of a duplex at the intersection all morning. When officers arrived, they found a man shot to death in its side yard.

The man was later identified as 26-year-old Chad W.E.V. Coen.

"I opened blinders up to see what's happening and there was a body laying over by the tree," said neighbor Richard Sarmiento, Sr. "You don't know how it happened, when it happened. I didn't hear any gunshots. I didn't know if he was stabbed or shot. All I know is police were in my yard when I got up."

For Sarmiento and those who live in the area, it was an unsettling sight. Those who saw the victim say he is a white male in his late teens or early 20s.

"I just walked over to see what is going on and I thought maybe it was the man who lived there who fell and no I guess it's some young kid who got shot," Jerry Culclasure said.

He said he didn't recognize the victim from the area. Police won't say if they believe Coen was shot at the location he was found or left there after being shot elsewhere.

Dorothy Wiseman said it's not unusual to have a lot of teens in the area, but the whole situation is disturbing.

"We get teenage kids playing basketball across the street, but usually it's real quiet," she said.

Police said they have very little information to go on and hope that neighbors can help.

The KCK Police Department's Major Case Unit is encouraging anyone with information regarding the shooting death to please call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
