Two people were killed in a wreck involving an 18-wheeler, early Tuesday morning in Meridianville.

The Madison County Coroner identified the victims as Daniel Garth Hestand, 59, and Kristie Lea Campbell, 39, both of Huntsville.

Hestand and Campbell were killed when the vehicle they were in collided with an 18-wheeler on Highway 231/431 between Becky Drive and Meridianville Bottom Road. The driver of the truck was not injured in the wreck.

Authorities said there was a dog inside of the car at the time of the wreck. The dog survived and is in the custody of animal control.

Madison County deputies diverted traffic onto Meridianville Bottom Road as emergency crews worked to clear the wreck. Both lanes of Highway 231/431 in Meridianville have since reopened.

The truck involved in the crash belongs to Swing Transport Inc., based in Salisbury, North Carolina. The company is aware of the situation and adjusters are at the crash site working with investigators.

State troopers continue to investigate the cause of the wreck.
