When Ivory Martin began asking about her 5-year-old grandchild after school last Monday, no one could find her.
"The principal called and said she don't know where she is either," Martin said.
Little Synethia Hill, who normally rides home in a car with her grandma, tried to walk home.
According to Martin, Synethia wasn't alone.
"She walked out of the school with another 5-year-old. Walked across the railroad tracks which I thought was very dangerous," Martin said.
Fortunately the two children made their way to a local Boys & Girls Club.
"The little girl [Synethia] was with, her mother got her and brought her home to us and I thank God for that. I'm upset, I'm confused. I'm like, 'How does a 5-year-old walk away from a school and no one sees it?'" Martin said.
This was a happy ending. Ivory is so thankful because she knows things could have been much worse.
"I thank God that nothing happened to her," she said.
FOX6 Investigative Reporter Ronda Robinson talked with the Bessemer Superintendent, Fred Primm Jr., who said he was aware of the incident.
"My office is investigating the matter to make sure it doesn't happen again. I am not aware of this happening at the school before," he said.
