COLUMBIA, MO (KCTV/AP) -

The firefighter who died while helping to evacuate an apartment complex in Columbia will be remembered with services on Thursday.

Memorial services for Lt. Bruce Britt will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Crossing Church in Columbia.

Britt, a 23-year veteran of the Columbia Fire Department, died Saturday when a walkway collapsed as he was evacuating people from the University Village Apartments. He was trapped beneath rubble when the walkway collapsed.

No residents were injured in the collapse. Britt was the first Columbia firefighter to die in the line of duty since 1986.

The apartment complex, built in 1956, houses students with children, married students, single graduate students and students older than 21.

University officials are still searching records to determine when was the last time the apartments were inspected. In the wake of Britt's tragic death, the university plans to inspect all buildings in Columbia owned or leased by the university.

A contractor was hired on Monday to launch the inspections.

MU is also allowing residents of the University Village Apartments to relocate.

Sirisak Laochankhan, a Ph.D. student from Thailand, is looking for a new on-campus place to live. He sees the corrosion on walkways throughout the complex and doesn't feel safe.

He said he doesn't have any confidence in the wood support put up since Saturday's collapse.

"It is just a temporary solution," he said, adding he doesn't feel safe coming and going from the apartments.
