Local Girl Scout makes money off munchies

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (CBS5) -
One Girl Scout set up shop outside a Phoenix dispensary Friday and her mother said she sold more cookies in an hour than she did all weekend at the grocery store.

"She sold over 50 boxes just in the last hour we've been here," said 8-year-old Lexi Carney's mom, Heidi Carney. She was right in thinking her third grader would make a killing at a medical marijuana dispensary, even though it might have some doing a double take.

"At her age she just thinks she's at a doctor's office," Heidi Carney said. "I really don't think there's anything wrong with it."

"We are getting some flack from some people but I don't really understand why," said TruMed Dispensary president Lauren Gooding. She said to remove the stigma of medical marijuana, they decided to run a promotion - buy $100 of cannabis, get a free box of cookies.

"It's no different than selling Girl Scout cookies outside a CVS pharmacy," Gooding said.

But the local Girl Scouts chapter says this location would not have been approved because they don't consider it kid-friendly. But, instead of kicking them out, they said they will just have a chat with the family.

"I was just more engrossed with the sale, the profit that we're going to make," Heidi Carney said.
