SPRINGFIELD, MO (KCTV/AP) -
A Springfield middle-school football coach plans to plead not guilty in the kidnapping and shooting death of a 10-year-old girl, his attorney said Friday.
During a brief court hearing, a public defender for 45-year-old Craig Michael Wood said that his client plans to contest the charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping and armed criminal action in the death of fourth-grader Hailey Owens.
Wood made his first court appearance Friday morning, appearing by video from the Greene County Jail, where he is being held without bond. He spoke only briefly to answer several questions from the judge. Hailey's parents, older brother and several family members also attended.
Police say Hailey was snatched off a neighborhood street Tuesday afternoon less than two blocks from her home as she walked to her best friend's house. Her body was found in Wood's basement. Authorities also found child porn evidence and cameras inside Wood's home.
Prosecutors say they found evidence that Wood has access to a $1 million trust, and that he should be able to afford his own attorneys and not have one at taxpayer expense.
This comes as Hailey's mother, Stacey Owens, discussed her daughter's death with a Springfield television station.
She said she never imagined being part of such a nightmare. She said her daughter had missed school on Tuesday because she was unwell, and she thought the fresh air on an unusually warm day would do her good.
"Nothing is going to happen. I guess I should have went with her," she said. "Why do they go after little kids and not mind their own business?"
Stacey Owens said she is drawing strength from her faith, and she knows her daughter is no longer in pain.
"She's fine," she said with a little laugh. "She's in heaven with angel wings."
