JJ's explosion 1 year anniversary: A look back

Posted: Updated:
KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

It was one year ago Wednesday that the Kansas City metro watched with shock and concern as an explosion and fire ripped through JJ's restaurant on the Country Club Plaza.

Just last week investigators determined a gas leak and lack of urgency led to the blast.

The Missouri Public Service Commission released a 125-page report that also said a drill bit used to bore through concrete hit the gas line that started the leak. Investigators say the lack of urgency by Missouri Gas Energy played a major role in the blast that killed waitress Megan Cramer and injured more than a dozen others.

City Hall officials said they're now changing the way they issue permits to contractors after Heartland Midwest thought they had a permit to dig at the Plaza when in fact their fax didn't go through.

KCTV5 will have more on the one-year anniversary in our 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10 p.m. newscasts. We'll speak to hospital staff, a Chopper 5 pilot and first responders on the scene as they remember the day.
