SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -
US23 is open again in Sylvania after a pedestrian was hit and killed by a semi truck. All southbound lanes of the highway were shut down for nearly three hours Wednesday afternoon.
Jeffrie Shirey, 37 years old, from Holland, OH was pronounced dead at the scene. Shirey was hit by a semi tractor-trailer driven by 46-year-old William Grafe from Brighton, MI just before 3 p.m. Grafe was not injured.
Shirey's mother describes him as caring, loving, and compassionate. She says his addiction to heroin overtook him, and she believes he committed suicide.
"Jeff did have a drug problem. He was on heroin, and he wanted desperately to get off of that and lead a normal life," said Carolyn Shirey
Shirey says her son checked into the hospital last Saturday to get help detoxing, and doctors found a blood clot.
Shirey says her son was hit and killed on US23 while she was waiting to pick him up in his hospital room.
"Ironically I was sitting in his room, looking right out at the expressway, where all the flashing lights and everything were, not realizing that you know that it had anything to do with me and then a couple people from the hospital told me what had happened," said Shirey.
Jeffrie walked out of the hospital without checking out. ProMedica says they are investigating the incident.
Jeffrie's mother says she is not upset he walked out, and that he is now in a better place, free of his addiction.
"If you don't die from the overdoes it's the only solution, I feel he defeated the heroin. He was a Christian. We know where he is at, which brings us great comfort," said Carolyn.
Jeffrie leaves behind 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls. The accident is still under investigation by Sylvania Police.
