(CNN) – It's not a reach to say that Yevgeny Plushenko is the David Beckham of Russia. He's a figure skating icon who has received rock star status around the world during his decorated career.

With the Winter Games coming to this home country, this was supposed to be where Plushenko shined.

Unfortunately, the 31-year-old was unable to compete in his specialty event after he felt twinges in his back during the final free program of the team competition and subsequently withdrew ahead of the individual short program.

There have been many questions swirling about concerning Plushenko, his reasons for withdrawing, his emotions upon exiting the ice, and what's next.

Plushenko spoke with World Sport's Amanda Davies about his experience at the Sochi games, fellow Russian skater Yulia Lipnitskaia and raising awareness of Russia's anti-gay propaganda.
