Youth come together to help feed the hungry

KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

Instead of spending Presidents Day hanging out at the mall or texting their friends, hundreds of area youth are helping feed the hungry.

Youthfront's Second Annual Peasants' Day Feast in KCK will allow for 30,000 meals to be packaged to address hunger.

Many of the meals will stay in the Kansas City area to help the poor while others will be shipped overseas to countries experiencing urgent food issues.

Panera Bread is joining in the community event and purchasing $10,000 meals plus providing employees to help package them.

Something to EatTM is a year-round meal packaging program that gives youth an opportunity to gather together and reflect on the reality of poverty .

"Packaging meals is a unique and powerful way for us to connect with our humanity and to live into generosity as we consider lives different from our own and our role in justice of our world," said Kurt Rietema, director of justice initiatives for Youthfront.
