KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Kansas City police are investigating a fatal crash.

It happened at about 11:45 p.m. Friday on Interstate 70 eastbound at U.S. Highway 40.

A crash report said the first vehicle entered the highway from an exit ramp and was driving in the wrong direction on I-70. The driver of a second vehicle, a semi-truck, was driving in the correct direction, eastbound in the eastbound lanes, and was unable to avoid the first vehicle.

The passenger of the first vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. He was later identified as 35-year-old Karl Silvey. His driver was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the second vehicle was not injured.

The highway was shut down for about four hours.

Police continue to investigate, but said contributing circumstances make it appear as though the driver of the first vehicle had alcohol impairment.
