(CNN) – Some good news for state-licensed marijuana businesses Friday.
The federal government announced new rules allowing bands to legally provide financial services to these marijuana businesses.
The Justice Department issued a memorandum to prosecutors saying that banks may do business with marijuana businesses that aren't violating specific federal laws.
Those laws include distribution to children, trafficking by cartels and trafficking to states where marijuana isn't legal.
Marijuana remains illegal under federal law.
It has been legalized for recreational and other uses under state laws in Colorado and Washington state. Eighteen other states and the District of Columbia allow marijuana use for medicinal purposes.
