Nor'easter comes to an end, Springfield gets another round of snow Saturday

Posted: Updated:
SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A winter storm dumped about a foot of snow on the Springfield area Thursday and early Friday. As the last rounds of snow quickly tapered off early Friday morning, residents of western Massachusetts will have plenty of time to dig out throughout the day before the next nor'easter develops on Saturday.

A majority of the snow came early Thursday afternoon. Heavy bands of snow created near whiteout conditions as snowfall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour were reported in the area. A second band of snow on the back end of the storm provided a few additional inches through the overnight hours.

Virtually all schools in the Springfield area were closed on Thursday, with many reporting cancellations or delays on Friday.

Springfield and South Hadley reported 8 inches of snow by the end of Thursday afternoon, with Southwick reporting 10 inches. Bradley International Airport reported 7.4 inches. West Springfield reported 9.5 inches by the end of Thursday afternoon, with an additional 3 inches from the second batch of snow overnight.

Snowfall totals have now exceeded seasonal normals for the Pioneer Valley. Through the end of the day Thursday, this winter's total sits at 43 inches at Bradley International. An entire winter's average snowfall is 40.5 inches.

As this nor'easter exits, gusty winds will wrap in behind the system. Wind gusts may reach 35 mph in the Springfield area and 45 mph in the hilltowns on Friday afternoon. Some partial clearing in the clouds is also anticipated.

Next up is another brush with winter weather for southern New England on Saturday. Another low pressure system develops off the coast, but its impacts should not be as significant across western Massachusetts. Snowfall totals should be around 2 inches in the Springfield area through the middle of the day, with higher amounts likely for eastern Massachusetts.

The complete seven-day forecast can be found in the Weather section.
