Takeout businesses boom in snow storms

Posted: Updated:

Many restaurants were open for business during Thursday's snow storm, and one popular spot in West Springfield says the snow doesn't hurt their sales.

The snow certainly doesn't stop the crew at Bella Napoli from making dough.

Gennaro Moccia opened the shop 10 years ago next Monday. He says in snow, sleet or sunny skies his customers are calling.

"Very, very busy it's a little more hectic, a little more difficult to handle because of obviously the weather conditions, we have to be a little more cautious on the roads," Moccia said.

Even on a night with bitter cold temperatures and messy roads, his team will average about 200 pizzas.

"Today was more delivery obviously," Moccia said.

All hands were on deck Thursday night tossing dough, chopping vegetables, sprinkling cheese and cooking pizzas to perfection.

There were more than a dozen chefs in the kitchen and five delivery drivers, and not a single employee called out of work or got stuck on their way in.

"Everybody came in. I am very lucky I have very, very good employees, very professional, they take on a big task," Moccia said.

Arriving safe to the families in West Springfield and Agawam, Moccia did say they ask their customers to expect an extra 15 or 20 minutes on top of their normal delivery time during bad weather. He says they understand and tend to tip better, knowing the drivers are risking more to feed them.

"I think that people are very generous to the employees in these conditions," he said.

The snow doesn't bother Moccia, who is originally from Italy, and it certainly doesn't bother business.

"Just any other day," he said.
