Metter residents could be without power through Saturday

Posted: Updated:
METTER, GA (WTOC) -

We are learning now that it could be a few more days before crews with the local power company in Candler County will be able to restore everyone's power.

Marie Ashmore has been sitting in the dark in more ways than more.

"Couldn't have coffee this morning. I can't cook, I can't really do anything. I can't really get any work done," she said.

She lost power Wednesday afternoon, but when she tried to call Excelsior EMC, the local power company, she couldn't get through.

"In fact, that's why I went to Metter," she said.  "I couldn't get an answer on the phone. You can't get anyone on the phone. So I said ‘I'm just going to drive up to the office and ask them.'"

Ashmore, and about 4,000 other Excelsior customers may be without power for another two days. Excelsior's general manager said they've called in at least 13 extra crews to handle the volume.

But for customers like Ashmore, whose house is at 46 degrees and lacking hot water, two days may be too long.

"It means I'm miserable," she said. "I've got to do something otherwise. I've got to take a shower, I've got to find somewhere else to go."

Excelsior serves about 22,000 customers across portions of 8 counties, and at one point yesterday they had well over 5 thousand meters out.
