Pictures show Kansas City classroom in major disrepair

Posted: Updated:

They're pictures of a classroom in a terrible state of disrepair, pictures obtained exclusively by KCTV5 News.

The room is an art classroom at Lincoln College Preparatory Academy in the Kansas City Public Schools.

According to the tipster, the room is constantly flooded and damp because of a defective heating and air conditioning unit.

"I think that it should be repaired. The school is responsible for doing things like that, and the kids should not be in an environment like that," said Malinda Williams, the grandmother of a Lincoln College Preparatory student.

Jessie Clemons, another grandmother of a student at the school, agrees.

"I think it should be repaired and brought up to date. I didn't realize it was like that," Clemons said.

The pictures show an exposed heating and air conditioning unit along with crumbling sheet rock around the unit. You can also see a mop and pail in the photos, used, the tipster claims, to clear up the water from frequent flooding.

The tipster goes on to say there were six separate floods in the room just since January.

The water often freezes because there is no heat in the classroom, and the floor was warped because of the constant dampness.

KCTV5 News contacted the Kansas City Public Schools about the conditions, and received the following statement:

"Repairs to a heating and cooling unit in that area of the 87-year-old campus are underway after its coils froze following the record below-freezing temperatures in the last seven days.

Efforts to isolate the damaged unit have inadvertently resulted in condensation that has leaked into the classroom.  A contractor is working to make repairs to the HVAC unit while air dampers and other insulating measures have been installed this week to reduce the condensation."

KCTV5 News has been told the classroom is still being used, but students are not seated next to the heating and air conditioning unit.

A timeline for repairs has not been set.
