Thief breaks into pharmacy twice via roof to steal drugs

Posted: Updated:
LAWRENCE, KS (KCTV) -

Lawrence police are on the lookout for a suspect who's broken into the same area pharmacy twice and he used an unusual entrance method.

Lawrence pharmacists Pat Hubbell said mid-day armed robberies used to be the scariest thing about his job, but now he's got to worry about criminals coming in through the roof.

"It shows how creative unfortunately they can be, or need to be," said Hubbell of Siglar Pharmacy. "It is pretty rare here in the Lawrence area that we have theft and burglary of a pharmacy, but it is something we have to be cognizant of."

Hubbell's pharmacy has not been hit, but a Dillions store on West 23rd Street in Lawrence was not so lucky Tuesday morning.

Police said an unidentified suspect made his way onto the roof of the Dillions about 12:30 a.m. and broke into the pharmacy through ceiling tiles. The thief caused around $500 worth of damage to the store and stole an undisclosed amount of prescription drugs.

It's the second time in a month that it's happened in Lawrence and police say both crimes are related.

The first happened in January. The thief caused similar damage and stole other drugs including Hydrocodone and Vicodin.

Police continue to look at surveillance, but say they've never seen anything like this before.

"We don't see a lot of roof top burglaries in general. It's unusual for someone to get up on a roof and try to make their way in there. Often times it takes quite a bit of effort and makes a lot of noise," said Sgt. Trent McKinley.

Hubbell said most of the pharmacies in Lawrence are aware of the burglaries and are taking precautions.

Police continue to search for the suspect.

Police are still not sure exactly how the suspect got inside through the roof and are continuing to investigate.
